What's new at Warren Soil and Water Conservation?
1. Drought. Warren County has suffered with drought condition for the past two years. Warren SWCD now has funding to do pasture renovation due to drought damage. These funds are available to restore vegetation to these pastures. There are requirements to meet and a ten year commitment to the program. This program is to encourage producers to properly manage their forages and livestock.
2. The cost share program has been funded for the 2009 program year. Producers and landowners of agricultural lands with water quality issues should contact their SWCD for technical advise and possible cost share assistance to those qualifying individuals.
3. With the start of school, Warren SWCD is planning for its annual Ecology Day on October 9, 2008, at Warren County Middle School for the sixth graders. Also, the poster, essay and speech contests are just around the corner. Another activity, that the high school and the middle school are involve in, is the Area IV Envirothon. The Envirothon is a team competition against teams from the other 10 counties that make up Area IV. This year Wilson SWCD is the host. The Area IV 2009 Envirothon will be held at Freedom Wildlife Habitat Refuge near the City of Wilson in Wilson County. Area IV 2009 Envirothon information can be located at area4envirothon.org. or at the Warren SWCD office.
